Stations

Overview

Stations are used to allow passengers and cargo to board or disembark the various means of transportation. Accordingly, there are two types of stations in the vanilla game:

sub_cargo.jpg sub_passenger.jpg

  • Passenger stations for trains, buses, trams, planes, and ships
  • Cargo stations for trains, trucks, and ships

Station construction

To build a station, go to the corresponding menu on the lower part of the screen and select a station. Move the mouse over the landscape to see a preview. It can be rotated by pressing the keys <n> or <m> - hold <shift> for a more precise rotation.

Stations will automatically snap to tracks or streets. If there is no warning/error message, you can click on the left mouse button to build the station. The landscape automatically adjusts to the station.

Except for air transport, every transportation method has two different types of stations. Airplanes can only carry passengers and therefore lack a cargo airport (However, cargo airports are available via modding).

Passengers will only board and disembark vehicles at passenger stations. Cargo will only get loaded at cargo stations. However, cargo currently unloads at ALL stations.

Station parameters and upgrading

There are numerous parameters available. For example, one can specify the number and length of platforms of a train station, or add tram tracks to a bus terminal. The parameters can be set before constructing the station in the menu bar, or for an existing station by clicking on it and selecting “Upgrade” in the station window.

The construction/upgrade costs will be displayed as a hovering number over the station. If a station construction/upgrade requires demolishing some buildings, they will be highlighted yellow and the cost for demolition is automatically added to the cost preview. Additionally, there will be displayed a warning.

Catchment area

catchment-area_02.jpgcatchment-area_03.jpg

Stations are only used by passengers or cargo, when the source or destination is within its catchment area.

All buildings within the catchment area are highlighted white when a station building is selected. The catchment range is calculated by the distance along the streets, not by a circular radius from the station.

Station capacity

The station capacity depends on the available space. For example, train stations with longer platforms have a higher capacity for passengers or cargo.

Note that cargo stations, cargo terminals and cargo harbors can be overloaded by the factor of 4.

Depots

Overview

sub_depot.jpg

Depots and shipyards are essential, because they're the only places where you can buy vehicles. Like stations, depots will also automatically snap to existing tracks or streets. You can rotate them by pressing the keys <n> or <m> - hold <shift> for a more precise rotation.

depots.jpg

Tips:

  • Make sure that your depots are connected to the existing railroad, street or tram network. This way, vehicles have a valid path to their first stop of the line they get assigned to.
  • Shipyards must be near navigable waters. If you buy a new ship and assign it to a line, make sure that there exists a path through navigable waters from the depot to the first stop of that line.
  • Aircrafts are bought at hangars, which are part of every airport.

Learn more about assigning vehicles to lines on the line manger page.
