Developer blog #6: Sound effects

Today we published a next developer blog. This time, we speak about how we designed the sound effects in order to make Transport Fever a game which is not only nice to look at, but also nice to listen to!

There is a multitude of sound effects and they can be categorized as follows:

  • Environment effects emitted by water, wind, birds, etc.
  • Constructions effects emitted by stations, industries, town buildings, etc.
  • User interface effects emitted when bulldozing, track construction, clicking buttons, etc.
  • Vehicle effects emitted by running trains, aircraft take-off, etc.

While all of them are important to reach a high degree of immersion, the vehicle effects for sure deserve closer attention. This is why we show examples of this category in the video.

Thanks a million for your interest and feedback. As always, we very much look forward to read your comments and receive your questions!

Kostet Umsteigen Zeit? Wie wird das berechnet?
    + Was machen Städte attraktiv?

  6. As much as I love the fact that the sound changes when the plane passes by, it’s not.. well.. There’s room for improvement in my opinion. So how are you dealing with the doppler effect? If that’s simulated, fine.. But plane engines sound quite different whether you’re in front or behind the engines. Thus, the experience is quite different.

If it’s handled with two sounds mixing, I’d love to hear more of a low swoosh after the plane have passed, as that’s more in line with what it’d sound like. Of course, different jet engines sound different.

Just a small thing like that could add so much more immersion.

  7. Wahnsinn,

Danke euch. +

  8. The sounds of the train need some rework. It is a single looped record and it is wery short with noticable repeat moment. You should record some more samples and find a way to mix between them. That way it will sound more realistic
In addition, the plane sound is not so realistic. The sound from the back sife of the engines is totally differend from the front side. Trust some one who was repairing planes at the airfield

    WEITER SO !

  10. Do modern level crossings chime as they close? Do trains ring their bells as they cross level crossings? Could this be added through modding? These would both be great effects to enhance realism.

  11. So far, so wonderful! But please reduce Airplanes Speed as it is taxiing too fast. Also the Take-off is quite unrealistic as the aircraft is accelerating very quickly and takes off after not even half a kilometre.

  12. The sounds look nice. But thats not the core thing for players.
I really hope that the designers of this game will succeed in getting to reboot the success of transport tycoon. Actually players are desperately looking for a new transport tycoon in new game that is fitting at this time. This game have the potential to be very succesful but will make it only when the game experience comes close to transport tycoon.
To achieve that succes it is necessay that this game transport fever can offer the same core player experience. That core player experience or in other words the core element of succes of transport tycoon lies in the railroad optimization process for building stations en railroad lines. Crucial elements are for example:
    – possibility to expand stations from 1 platform to 6 or 8 platforms
    – possibility to make difficult and real life railroad connections and intersections (bridges/tunnels/merging lines
    – possibility to make very difficult rail routings by signposts en station entry and exit ways
    – good interface which shows a route and give managing options (like no stops, wait to unload, time schedule)
    – and i think most important is a good and accurate feedback system which gives the player information on the actions that are taken (for example it must be very clear what the efficiency rating is for a station for a certain good. How long is a good waiting for transport and is related to the production rate of a factory. If more and faster pickups of a good is achieved it must have impact on the factory production and or the expansion of a certain facility)

    • I agree that sound and many graphical features that developers are working on are not the core thing for players like me. I don’t really care if doors really open or if people is rendered inside busses… I also agree that the most important thing is gameplay, a functioning user interface (e.g. easier building of lines, replacing vehicles etc.), the possibility to build easily a complete transport network (more control on schedules or spacing would be nice here) and a lot more of feedback (I already posted on other forums a lot of suggestions like more info and graphs on passengers destinations, usage rates by destination, efficiency etc.).

However, I would not really like to duplicate the experience of transport tycoon (which I liked a lot when it came out) where you build capacity and the game fills it… I really like the demand-based simulation behind this game, where there must be a demand before factories start to produce and passengers have their destinations and choose which transport they will use. Of course, it needs some refinements (e.g. faster ramp-up, avoid drastic disruptions, allow multiple sourcing, more complex industry chains etc.) but for me that’s the main selling point of this game (in addition to modern graphics).

I really hope that in the next dev blogs there will be something more about the simulation/gameplay of passengers and goods.

  13. The plane’s taxi speed is too fast, especially when turning onto the runway, also the take off distance is too short. And we would like to hear some train horns, as the horns in TF are just unrealistic.

  15. Sounds great ! What about music ? While the tracks in Train Fever were fine, it would be nice to have a more discrete soundtrack that can play for much longer without being repetitive or boring.

  16. Transport fever looks sooooo good I can’t wait when it comes out to steam. In saying that I do have some questions about the game like:

1.can you make a metro like route which is all underground?
    2. and you edit the track speed because there are plenty of new trains which go a lot more faster than 300km/hr?
    3. will there be boeing aircrafts implemented into the game because Boeing and Douglas were the main driving force of the aviation industry?
4.when the year is either 1914-18 or 1934-45 will there be a war like looks to the cities and will the people be using less transport because of the shortage of money?
    5. will there be any other DLC’s added to the game because a lot of other couties use trains e.g china, Australia and obviously America?

If you could answer any of those questions that would be wonderful or could you try to put those features into the game if not it’s fine because you have a small development team and I understand that there are other features which are more important than those needed in the game.

    thank you

    Daumen hoch… macht weiter so!!!

  19. That airplane take off is a little bit offputting. While in reality intersection take offs exist, this one looks very unrealistic. Plane taxis, then stops halfway on the RWY, and then takes off.
Also, why not put taxiway at the beggining/end of the RWY, and not 1/3 of the RWY length?

  20. I had an idea where a system for modding could be invented – in reality liveries changed over time so could it be possible to set up multiple liveries for a given vehicle and have it change in a given year in the game? There would have to be another reference file saying what textures apply from/to, or maybe even an option when buying the vehicle. I think it would be better to concentrate on the core game before creating example vehicles and leaving it to the modding community instead, but we would need the system implemented!
