Developer blog #3: Mod support

The third developer video blog focuses entirely on modding possibilities. Modding allows players to modify the game and also to add their own content with simple means.

The possibilities in Transport Fever are comprehensive: Existing vehicles can be modified and new ones added to the game. New missions and buildings can be created and so-called script mods influence the game’s behavior in many ways.

The example in today’s video demonstrates how building can be easily extended with various functions and properties.

A lot of effort was put into the development of modding interfaces to make sure modding is extensive and flexible, but also accessible. Thanks to Steam Workshop support, installing and sharing mods is a matter of a few simple mouse clicks.

Thank you for your great interest! As always we are looking forward to your feedback!

  1. Looking good. Mod support is always a welcome feature as it adds tons of content to the game that the developer doesn’t have to build themselves. I also really like how stations can have both train and street connections.

I just hope there is a greater variety and complexity when it comes to industry and cargo transport. I still sometimes load up the original Railroad Tycoon (1990) because it is such a fun game with many cargo types.

  2. Very impressive so far. From what I have seen so far I recommend one additional feature, and that is to be able to have curved platforms (think Paddington Station, York Station, etc in the UK where space really is limited and platforms do end up curved. Of course if this is possible through mods then it would be great, but having some (or maybe just one or two examples) in game would open the doors to creativity.

  3. Hallo,

  5. that’s not really modding, that’s content adding. modding would be that we could add and position resources and industry building to the map, shrink the footprint of stations — add game significant things which involve the player and the game beyond running a choo-choo or air-pwain.

  6. Hallo Tom!

    Cel

  7. Oh my god!
    Oh my god!
    Oh my god!
    Oh my god!
Awesomeness and thank you so much for Workshop support!!!
Though I hope that you will make it that mods can be removed from saved games and if any content from a removed mod is either just deleted or replaced by a default? That way if mods don’t work it won’t ruin the saved game.
So are the developers saying that we have to build the industries? They aren’t automatically added to maps upon game creation?
Yay more reveals, please add the Metroliners as engines and carriages. Not just a Multiple Unit.
I wonder if you will add AI controlled disasters and random events?
Will the modding tools be part of the game or a separate program that we could download from Steam?

  8. Personaly prefer solid vanila game than mods. Anyway, your communication with players has superb level now. I hope that Tom will help prevent such things like add main connection issue to the last game. Keep up.

  9. Hi Everyone!

Is that possible to had “options” with these pre-builded blocks? For example, if we take the block shown at 4:40; is it possible to add options to adjust the curves angles or adjust the direction of “one way signals” or even the number of tracks with dial box? In another videos, we can see these types of option for block created by the game developers but these option could be available for modders too?

    Bye!

  12. Looks like this will at least allow the creation of “prefab stations”- so we won’t need to recreate detailed stations over and over again. I like it.

    • By the way… I really wish for more smooth terrain height borders when placing buildings / rails. As we can see in the video, changes in height still result in very ugly borders that we manually have to remove with the smudge tool. At least in Train Fever this can become a huge pain in the arse, as most of the time you’ll first have to remove the building, then smoothen the ground, then place the building again and hope for the best.

      • I belive that they saw CitySkyline way of construction. Seemles. Friendly user interface and friendly construction tools were most problematic part of previos game. It looks like they learn.

It would be nice the construction blend into terrain, right.

        • But if I remember right, Cities: Skylines has exactly the same problem with placing terra forming due to placing big objects. Not as bad as in Train Fever, but still visible.

  13. I wonder if it will be possible to add new types of road and rail that do not have the restrictions from Train Fever? I would like to have footpaths (pedestrian only), streetcar only , tram rails in the median of a street, single track streetcar segments and different types of road surfaces with different rolling resistance (thus limiting or improving acceleration and possible speed distinct from the posted speed limit)?

I would also like an option to build railroads with a load limit (cheaper to build, but limiting the locomotives and cars you can run there). Ideally, I would also want to have different minimum curve radius for different locomotives and cars.

Another thing I have missed is the ability to buy land without terraforming or building on it in order to plan for future expansion. A sufficiently flexible modding system should take care of all these wishes.

  14. WIll we be able to build more sophisticated tram and bus stops with multiple exits and entrances? And will we be able to have trams with doors on botch sides so you can have them stop at both sides of a platform?

    • *To clarify, I mean new varieties of rail [expanding on the default of regular, high-speed, electrified] or road – things like low-speed rail or highway. I don’t mean entire new categories of connection, like pedestrian-only paths.

    Simon
